Then it was on to the Port of Naples. A huge and busy port full of ships of all kinds, with a very busy group of ferries taking passengers and vehicles around the islands and ports of Italy.
The Port of Naples is one of the busiest and most important ports in Italy, situated along the western coast in the Campania region. The port has a rich maritime history, dating back to ancient Roman times, and has served as a crucial trade and transport hub in the Mediterranean. I was amazed just how busy this huge port was. Its position makes it a vital connection between Italy, the rest of Europe, and various destinations in the Mediterranean. The port has loads of ferry services to various islands such as Capri, Ischia, and Procida, as well as to mainland destinations like Sicily and Malta. Interesting to see the shipyards busy as well with a couple of floating docks being used.
The port of Naples, with ships and shipyards everywhere, such an interesting place to visit.
We stopped here and for us it was a short journey to visit the amazing Amalfi Coast, with a first stop in a Port with a connection to ships built at Leith. Salerno was also the site of the Allied landings during WW2.
The ships built at Leith for the huge Ellerman Shipping Line were primarily named after towns and cities in Italy, a country where many would trade cargo with during the 20th century. Ship No 495 from the Leith yard of Henry Robb was launched in November 1965.
Salerno, located in the Campania region of Italy, is a picturesque city known for its stunning coastal views and historical significance. Salerno is situated along the Tyrrhenian Sea, south of Naples, and serves as a gateway to the Amalfi Coast.
The city has a rich history that dates back to ancient Roman times and has been influenced by various cultures, including the Byzantines and Normans. The port is a vital hub for commerce and tourism, with ferry services connecting the city to destinations along the Amalfi Coast and the islands of Capri and Ischia.
Salerno is the perfect base for exploring the famous Amalfi Coast, known for its dramatic cliffs, charming villages, and breath-taking views.
The Port of Salerno with the crazy road built above the town, between the mountain and the sea.
Another view of Salerno as we travel on to Amalfi.
Then it was on to Civitavecchia for Rome.
