Build during the First World War as Yard No 243 by the shipyard of Ramage & Ferguson, she was launched in July 1917, as an order for the huge Ellerman Wilson Lines shipping company.

SS Darino would see service during the inter-war years from her launch in 1917 till she was sunk just a couple of months after the start of the Second World War when she was hit by a torpedoes from a German U-Boat with the loss of 16 of her crew.
