Travels around the Mediterranean

Updated: 2 days ago

No not on a Donkey, this one was on a Ship. First stop was Palermo in Sicily.

The thing about a Ships Wake is you don’t know where it is going or where it is coming from in a picture. This one is mid-way to Sicily, Italy.

This was the ship, the Marella Voyager ex MV Mercury built in Germany and launched in 1997 she had a facelift in 2023.

A few visitors were in Palermo at the same time, made me think a little bit about the effect of tourists on favoured places to visit, although think about it was about as far as I got, as the destinations were just so interesting and difficult to miss out if fortunate enough to be able to visit.

Palermo Port, located in the capital city of Sicily, is one of the largest and most important ports in Italy. The port has a rich history dating back to ancient times, serving as a crucial hub for trade and cultural exchange in the Mediterranean. Today, it features modern facilities that accommodate both commercial shipping and passenger ferries.

The port connects Sicily with mainland Italy and other Mediterranean destinations, offering frequent ferry services to places like Naples, Catania, and Tunis. They do like many other European Cities use the sea and Ferries much more than we do in Britain, strange to say as we are an Island Nation.

Palermo Port is not just a gateway to Sicily but also a vibrant part of the city's identity and history. They also have a pretty useful football team as well. The old prison looks very intimidating not a welcoming place as you would imagine, we went past it on the way up into the mountains. and is home to many of todays well known Mafia members.

MSC SEASIDE was in port at the same time, she dwarf our vessel as many of the larger cruise ships did. It is a massive industry around the world, and I seem to remember perhaps 30 or so years ago this industry was in serious decline now it is booming, with bigger not to say better vessels being built all the time. Great news for shipbuilders.

Next Stop was Naples.
